Flavour Profile

Salties Monkfish is often called the "Poor mans Lobster", as its taste and texture is somewhat close to Lobster. It has a mild taste and firm texture that is excellent to put on the BBQ. Monkfish is also often called "Goosefish" because of its incredibly delicious liver.

Major Fishing Areas

Monkfish is caught on the southeastern, western, and northwestern coasts of Iceland. The largest area is off the northwestern coast.

Did you know...

All Monkfish that is sold is actually female. Until recently, scientists thought there we no male Monkfish. The relationship between female Monkfish and male Monkfish is almost parasitic as the males, which are a lot smaller, attach themselves onto the females and grow that way.

Did you know...

Common size of Monkfish is between 50 and 80 cm and 30 lbs. Some individuals can grow upwards of 200 cm, 60 lbs, and live for 20 years.

Did you know...

Monkfish is not very picky when it comes to choosing food. They’ll eat shrimp, crab, lobster, snails, fish, and anything that will fit into their mouths; including seabirds. Their big mouths allows them to eat pray that is bigger than them.
